Online Trauma-Informed Therapy FAQs
Below are answers to common questions about starting online trauma-informed therapy — from what a first session looks like to how I choose the right approach for you. If you don't see your question here, feel free to reach out directly.
Getting Started
What happens in a first session?
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll talk through what's bringing you to therapy, your history, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with — this session is about building safety and figuring out if we're a good fit.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Research consistently shows that online (telehealth) therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns, including trauma and PTSD. Many clients find it more accessible and comfortable to process difficult experiences from their own space
Do you work with clients outside Indiana and Virginia?
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I'm only able to provide therapy to clients physically located in Indiana or Virginia at the time of our sessions, due to state licensing requirements.
How long does therapy typically take?
This varies widely depending on your goals and what you're working through. Some clients find focused, short-term work helpful; others benefit from longer-term support. We'll check in regularly about your progress and what feels right for you.
Therapy Approach
What is trauma-informed care?
Trauma-informed care means recognizing how past experiences — big or small — can shape the way we think, feel, and respond to the world. Rather than asking "what's wrong with you," this approach asks "what happened to you," and prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment at every stage of our work together.
How do you decide which approach to use with a client?
There's no one-size-fits-all method. I draw from EMDR, DBT, ERP, and existential talk therapy, and we'll find the right combination based on what you're working through, your history, and what feels most helpful to you. This often shifts and evolves as we go.
What's the difference between EMDR, DBT, and talk therapy?
Each approach offers different tools: EMDR helps process specific traumatic memories, DBT builds skills for managing intense emotions, and talk therapy provides space for open exploration and self-discovery. I tailor the approach — or blend of approaches — to what fits you best.
Do I need a specific diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people come to therapy without a diagnosis, simply looking for support during a hard season, a life transition, or ongoing patterns they want to understand better. A diagnosis isn't required to begin — we'll figure out together what's most useful for you.
